I suspected the alternator bearing on my 2001 Nissan Micra was making a lot of noise as it was starting to fail, so I loosened the belt tension to see how it would sound. This is not a cure, it is just a way of confirming if a bad bearing is the issue. Fairly conclusive I think. If the bearing is failing then it should be repaired as soon as possible.
