I spent 10 nights sleeping inside a Cheetah enclosure with two adults; setting up camp inside a concrete box in their territory. This was an experiment to see how Cheetah behavior differs from daylight activities and it turned out as one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I hope to make people rethink all their preconceptions about Cheetahs with my overall efforts. Things they won't read in a book, or see visiting a zoo, or watching on Nature Programs like Nat Geo Wild. It will take years.

These two females were bred and hand raised at this Cheetah Breeding facility called Cheetah Experience in South Africa. I spent four days getting to know them first and letting them get to know me before spending any nights inside their concrete Cheetah box. They were surprisingly nice; even more so at night than during the day. Cheetahs are diurnal rather than nocturnal which means they hunt during the day rather than night. As a result, their moods were relaxed. Their thoughts were not about food or hunger, but relaxation and rest.

I this episode, I film the Cheetahs initial entry into the concrete box. You see how they pick their spots and it's normally in the same place with Faith flopping down lengthwise to me and Eden following as she lays next to my head so she can groom me. Their groom sessions last up to 20 minutes to include "Love" biting. They finally settle down and become relaxed rest of night... occasionally purring when they woke up at the lightest disturbance. This was the basic routine every night.

With Faith's handicap (sterile meningitis as a cub), her love biting is dangerous. She cannot control her bite strength and will cause scaring bites if she get's a hold of you. She grabbed my watch one year and broke the band off of it with my wrist still attached! I have seen scars from her love bites on peoples arms. So I did not let her grab me ever. She tried many times but it was only the 1st 20 minutes she and Eden liked love biting and after that, they both calmed down.

Once they stopped the biting and grooming, they really relaxed and became very cuddly with Eden continuing to love bite but did not bite hard... normally. She did bite me hard a couple of times and I had to cough in her face very loudly to get her to release. It is what they teach you if any of the Cheetahs grab you with a love bite and won't let go. Of course that does not work if they bite to hurt you :)

I show how they also love bite themselves and then how Eden fell in love with me. She insisted on laying falling asleep next to my face but it was after 15 minutes of grooming that was extremely painful. I had to keep blocking her affections until she settled down. She purred most of every night and getting sleep was minimal. But after the totally settle down and want to sleep, they were the most cuddly cats in the world. I could use them as hand warmers and wrap my arms around them for warmth.

On my last episode, I'll discuss more about specific behavior I will highlight like dreaming, grooming, jealousy, and my conclusions as to why they behaved the way they did.
