Skaya went to the dentist to have her teeth cleaned, and she came back acting all funny due to the meds!

Skaya had recently been acting a bit strange: she was reluctant to chew on raw bones (which she usually loves) and would sometimes even refuse to eat her dinner. I thought she might just be acting fussy (since she tends to be a fussy eater), but I got worried her change in behavior might be due to something else – dental pain.

I brought her in to see the vet and he said her teeth looked great and that he couldn’t see anything at surface level, so we opted to get some Xrays and a professional dental cleaning for good measure. This means Skaya had to go under anesthesia, which is why she ended up acting all funny in this video. She had just woken up and was still feeling a little groggy from all the medication!

As is turns out, poor little Skaya has damage to the roots (nerves) of two of her back teeth. The vet suspects that it was perhaps due to external trauma, most likely a large stick she was walking around with that she hit at a bad angle.

It’s very possible that Skaya is not in any actual pain but that the memory of the initial pain still remains, so she’s avoiding using those teeth as much. Only time will tell. In the meanwhile, the vet is remaining optimistic and is hoping that with time, the damaged roots will repair themselves since her teeth are otherwise very healthy. Here’s hoping that’s exactly what happens! (And if not, at least we can try and prevent any further damage from here on out).

Skaya’s already feeling much better now, but her mouth is still a little sensitive since her little dentist visit. She’ll be on some pain meds for the next few days, but otherwise, she’s back to her happy sassy self!
