The meningococcal bacteria causes two diseases: meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia. It is every parent’s nightmare. One minute your child is full of life and energy, the next they are fighting for survival. Every year, this disease kills thousands of children round the world and is a major world health problem, capable of killing 25,000 people in a single epidemic. But at this point, there is no one vaccine that protects against all strains of the disease. Meningitis – The Search For A Cure follows the scientists who are working against time to develop a way to combat this deadliest of diseases. At the moment, research is focusing on survivors who have developed immunity to different strains. Scientists believe that these survivors may hold the key to a universal vaccine being developed within the next five to 10 years.
