These barn owl chicks are opening & closing their beaks as fast as they can to keep cool.

Like dogs panting, this action increases air flow across their mouths & throat to allow evaporative cooling. The process is called 'gular fluttering'.

UK HEATWAVE
Temperatures here in the UK reached record highs this week.

BUT THE OWLS ARE OK
But owls have higher average body temperatures than humans and can cope better than we can with heat. These three chicks are Gylfie the barn owl's chicks and are six weeks old. They are managing very well.

GULAR FLUTTERING
The way owls 'pant' or clack their beaks rapidly, is very effecitve at helping them to beat the heat. It is known as 'gular fluttering'.
