Pakistan's Gwadar Port, a centerpiece of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is facing serious challenges, raising questions about the project's viability. Experts say the port suffers from mismanagement, lack of infrastructure, and a lopsided revenue model, mirroring the struggles of a failing startup. At the launch of the port project, both Pakistan and China claimed “Gwadar would become the next Dubai”. However, with only 17 vessels docking in 2023 compared to hundreds at competitor ports, Gwadar has fallen far short of expectations.

Analysts point to several factors behind the port's struggles, the most significant one being an unbalanced revenue model. China takes a whopping 90% of Gwadar's port revenue, leaving a meagre 10% for the Pakistani government and nothing for the local Gwadar government. This has fuelled resentment among locals who feel they are not benefiting from the project and has even led to attacks on Chinese investments by Baloch separatists.
