This episode is set in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. A pride of lions is a matriarchal society. The adult females go hunting. One cub unwittingly sabotages its mother’s hunt, while another goes missing. The pride tries to catch a warthog, which escapes into its den. It takes the whole pride six hours to dig out and kill the warthog.

Rainy season ushers in a great migration of wildebeest. Attacking at night, a female lion brings down one of the herd, but leaves it to the cubs to make the kill. Suddenly, another female is attacked by an unfamiliar lion. It seems the pride has strayed into another pride’s territory. The wounded female is left alone until her wounds have healed. An aged member of the pride collapses, and waits alone to die. Even for the king of the beasts, daily life is harsh and unforgiving.

The program uses reedited footage shot for WakuWaku Animal Land, which aired from 1983 to 1992.
