In this video I talk about the kind a bamboo barrier that I use and how important they are if you plant running bamboo. Concrete can be used but it will crack over time and will fail to contain bamboo eventually. Unless its poured very thick (wide), but then it will be a lot more work and cost more than using a durable and unbreakable, thick plastic barrier like this.

If you have sandy or loose loamy soil and live in warmer climates, You will need to go deeper (up to 3 ft). Leaving a high barrier lip above ground makes it easier to see and prevent any rhizomes from jumping over it. Never put a barrier flush with the ground level.

You could dig a trench and back fill with mulch or gravel and then trim the ryzomes once or twice a year. But that method would only be for smaller groves. Don't give yourself that much work. Just drop in a thin plastic barrier and be never worry about it again.
