Legendary Band’s Debut Is SO GOOD…It COULD'VE Been a GREATEST Hits Album! | Professor of Rock

Coming up. It’s the story of a song that never really got its due when it was released as a single. My Best Friend's Girl by the Cars… Yeah, sure it was a Top 40 hit… but not by much. And yet I don’t think anyone today could deny that this song is an absolute classic rock staple. It’s also a signature song from a debut record so strong that honestly, it could have been released as a greatest hits album. Written by Rik Ocasek with vocal help by Benjamin Orr, this song, along with Just What I Needed, lit up radio in 1978 and we’ve had the meaning of the song backwards from the start. Up next, the story of a 70s classic by a band that balanced punk, new wave, power pop, and rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. Today I’m excited today to get into the story behind The Car’s second single from their selftitled debut album, My Best Friend’s Girl.

The Cars were formed in Boston in 1976, but only after bandmates Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr had spent the better part of a decade in and out of bands together. The two frontmen met in 1968 and were fast friends from the start. As Ben remembered it, they met in Columbus, Ohio when they were both booking bands, and they formed a booking agency together. They were also both playing music. They each liked each other’s songs, so they put a band together and started playing around Ohio State University.

This first band was called ID Nirvana. And though it would be shortlived, the two friends would be in it together for the long haul. Said Ric, “I met Ben in 1968. I had a band in Columbus… [and] he came to see us. He told me he could sing, came to my house, and sang the Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’ in the sweetest voice I ever heard. The next day, he joined that band and every other band I had up to and through The Cars.”

When Ocasek said every other band, it wasn’t a short list. After ID Nirvana came Leatherwood in 1970, Milkwood in 72, Richard and the Rabbits in 74, Ocasek and Orr in 74, Cap’n Swing in 76, and a preliminary version of The Cars in 76. The classic lineup of The Cars was finalized in early 1977. Ocasek and Orr both split time singing lead. Ocasek also played rhythm guitar and Orr bass. On lead guitar, it was the great Elliot Easton, on keys Greg Hawkes, and on drums David Robinson.
