At its peak in the 1870s, the town of Fayette had nearly 500 residents. When the charcoal iron market began to decline, Fayette's smelting operations were closed in 1891, and the majority of residents moved to find work elsewhere. The town became a resort and fishing village until it became a State Park in 1959. This ghost town allows visitors to explore and learn about what life here was like around 150 years ago, and it is truly a diamond in the rough for any history buff or adventure seeker.
