Mr Kes, the kestrel who brought his six chicks up alone after their mother disappeared, is courting again. Watch him as bow and bob as he tries to interest a new female to one of the nests near my garden.

BEECH STUMP
This is the nest tawny owls Bomber & Luna used to bring up their adopted chicks, but it's empty now so it looks like Mr Kes is thinking of occupying it. If all goes well this could be the start of a new kestrel family.... Watch them on my live webcam here    • Video

KESTREL COURTSHIP
Watch how this male kestrel bobs his head up and down. This is typical of courting kestrels when they are trying to show off a potential nest site to a mate.

MR KES SINGLE DAD
Mr Kes has lived in and around my garden for many years, but sadly this year his partner Mrs Kes suddenly disappeared whilst their chicks were just one week old. She hasn't been seen since and so I now believe she must have died.

MR KES BECOMES SINGLE DAD
Usually when a female disappears or is killed, the chicks perish because male kestrels do not know how to take care of their chicks. They lack the skill of being able to tear food up into small enough pieces for their chicks and also do not seem to know how to brood the chicks to keep them warm. But Mr Kes managed to learn how to care for his chicks. Watch the story here:    • Kestrel Dad Learns to Feed his Chicks...

I am a British wildlife artist based in Thixendale, North Yorkshire, UK. I build ideal habitats to encourage wildlife into my garden and use nest cams to study their behaviour. These studies inform my paintings. I share the best of my video research on this channel for free. If you would like to support my work please consider a small donation here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s...'>https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s...

Or of course you may like to purchase my artwork which you will find on my website: https://www.robertefuller.com. Many of the paintings are portraits of the creatures you watch here!
