Iso Emerger

Allen McGee

This fly is intended as a match the hatch pattern for selective trout, especially for rivers like the Upper Delaware system that have good populations of this species and on which trout heavily feed through the summer months. The fly imitate an emerging dun, the most vulnerable life stage. Trout will rise and eat this fly even if there are not a lot of them on the surface as Isonychia are a favorite of trout being a large meal that is easy to target and hatch over a long period of time. In other words, they get accustomed to looking for them and targeting them. The fly uses soft hen cape for the hackle collar and deer hair for the wing to provide the silhouette of leg and wing and movement even when the fly is dead drifted. If you dress the wing sparser, you can also fish this fly subsurface and ascending emerger. However, on the surface just as effective as it floats well and is easy to track. The profile it presents as it sits in the surface film is accurate for these emergers.
