Is melatonin safe for my child? Recommended dose for kids/teens

Trouble falling asleep affects up to 25% of children and adolescents. It can lead to crankiness, trouble paying attention, headaches, high blood pressure, weight problems and depression.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by your brain that is naturally released at night and tells the body it’s time to sleep. Melatonin can be purchased over the counter as a dietary supplement for sleep aid.

Although reports of melatonin poisonings in kids have significantly increased in the last 10 years, Melatonin may be safe to use in some kids when taken shortterm.
It can help kids rest while trying to establish or reestablish good bedtime routines. It may also help children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism or ADHD, but its use in these circumstances should be discussed with a pediatrician.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, many children respond to a low dose (0.5 or 1 milligram) when taken 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime. And most children who do benefit from melatonin, do not need more than 36 mg.

Remember, the best medicine for sleep issues is a good bedtime routine that is specific to your child and their age. Going to bed at the same time and being consistent is key.
If you are considering melatonin for your child, discuss this with your pediatrician. And always store all medicines, vitamins and dietary supplements in a safe place, away from children, to prevent poisoning.
