Intelligent reflecting surfaces are attracting massive attention from the 6G research community, but is it truly the fairest technology of them all? In this talk, Professor Emil Björnson (KTH, IEEE Fellow) explains how these intelligent mirrors can be used to control wireless signals, to improve communication channels. He exposes the fundamental benefits and drawbacks of the technology, thereby narrowing down what the best use case is. The surfaces are also known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and softwarecontrolled metasurfaces.
