Insulin is synthesized as preproinsulin and processed to proinsulin. Proinsulin is then converted to insulin and Cpeptide and stored in secretary granules awaiting release on demand. Insulin synthesis is regulated at both the transcriptional and translational level.

The major purpose of insulin is to regulate the body's energy supply by balancing micronutrient levels during the fed state [30]. Insulin is critical for transporting intracellular glucose to insulindependent cells/tissues, such as liver, muscle, and adipose tissue.
