The Manitoba Métis Federation is hosting First Nations from Ontario and Quebec, along with Inuit leaders, for a twoday summit tackling the issue of Indigenous identity fraud.

It's being called an unprecedented gathering — First Nations, Inuit and Métis as a united front — making a plan to fight the growing trend of nonIndigenous people selfidentifying as Indigenous to access rights, jobs and money they're not entitled to.

The problem is widespread across North America and growing, particularly in central and eastern parts of Canada.

“It leads to authoritative roles in government, authoritative roles in businesses, authoritative roles in having impact on the decisions of policy,” said David Chartrand of Manitoba Métis Federation. “It is a dangerous road we're heading to.”
