I´ve Done Exercise for 20 Years - Why I Train and What Motivates Me?

Hello warrior, in this video I will tell you about all the reasons why I don't stop training and exercising. I've been working out for 20 years and I don't plan to stop. If you need motivation to keep going or to start exercising, in this video I will give it to you.

5 years ago I made a video called why I train and what motivates me. Maybe you find yourself in the situation that you find it difficult to train or to keep up your training, so in this video I would like to give you this motivation. But surely today I will say things a bit differently than in the other video, because any evolution is normal and when I made the other video I was 30 years old, now I am 35, and surely when I will be 40 I will see things in an even different way.

You know, now thinking about it at various times in my training life I had different reasons to train. At school I was almost two years younger than all the other kids in my class. My parents sent me earlier, because at the age of 4 I could read and calculate. But because all the other children didn't know my age and I didn't tell them, they teased me a lot, seeing me as perhaps younger.

So when I was 1213 years old I started doing pullups and dips because I wanted to be stronger and not to be picked on.

This actually worked, but when I went to university I was among much more civilised people and nobody picked on me. That's when I started going to the gym, it was 2003 or 2004. At that time there were no social networks, in fact I remember that even the idea of putting your photo on the internet they would look at you like you were crazy. Back then I was already into photography and I remember bringing a small camera with me to take a couple of training photos. At that time you did it for the pure love of exercise, because it wasn't about sharing or comparing your progress with anyone.

Later on in New York I trained because I wanted to get rid of all the problems of life. At the beginning I changed about 10 jobs I worked in construction, kitchen installation, moving, washing windows in highrise buildings, waiter, barista until I got a job in an office. All this I combined with studies. So at that time I was literally training not to go crazy. At the worst time, I was literally doing it on the street in front of the building in Harlem where I lived. And then I would go to a gym that wasn't commercial if it wasn't owned by New York City. The price was super cheap like $10 a month and there you would find mostly excons and people with no money like me.

But that time passed when I was too strapped for cash and I actually moved on to the other gym, but there my motivation to train was starting to wane. In fact, some months I would go, some months I wouldn't and so on. I found my motivation again by going back to training in the street. It was precisely in 2010 that the movement started to emerge and I knew that it was going to get really big.
At that time I was very motivated to know that I was part of something new that focused on body control, endurance and skills, not just muscle size.

When the weather got bad I would go to the gym, but there I would do weights and what they call calisthenics training now. In fact, it was funny because in the neighbourhood where I lived there were a lot of Mexicans and I remember when I was doing muscle ups they would say to each other no mames güey, viste como va para arriba, guey. At that time I didn't know Spanish, but as a Spaniard I always liked it there, I more or less understood what they were saying.

Later on in Colombia you could see how the movement had grown. And I think it hit a real boom when Instagram became popular in 2014 and you could share videos. Everyone wanted to invent some new tricks and moves and it all went viral and more people did it.

Well at that time I surely knew it was my thing and I was motivated to explore my way in this new sport or movement, no matter what you call it. That's when I realised that my thing wasn't acrobatic tricks, but rather to put on a little vest or hang some weights and thanks to my mental endurance be able to complete some very demanding training sessions.

That's exactly what I started to enjoy I didn't pay attention and I wasn't looking to get bigger and more muscular at any cost, but to be able to do a routine that was so demanding that you only got scared when you heard how many sets and reps it takes. If you look at it strictly from the point of view of muscle gain or something like that then it was probably counterproductive. But my goal was to set mental challenges and overcome them and know that I am capable in the face of obstacles.
