Are You Thinking About Seeding Your Lawn This Spring? Watch This.

One of the hardest things to do in lawn care is successfully seed a cool season lawn in Spring. Spring seeding is not the best time for planting cool season grass. But there are a few things you can do to improve your success. Aim to seed early in the season, but wait until soil temperatures are at least 50 degrees. This roughly corresponds to the optimal soil temperatures for cool season grass seed germination. Early spring seeding, when the soil temps are in the 50’s will help the grass get ahead start developing deep roots before the summer heat arrives. Late seeding doesn't allow much time for the grass to develop a strong deep roots.

Another concern with seeding is the spring is an extreme amount of weed pressure. To combat this issue, we will need to apply a special herbicide that will allow the grass to germinate while preventing and killing weeds. The only herbicide that will allow this is Tenacity aka Mesotrione. I will be applying the Generic version of Tenacity mixed in a tank sprayer and spray it on my lawn which will give us 30 days of weed control.

Last but not least, the most important step for a successful spring seeding is WATER WATER WATER. Water the grass at least 3 times a day and keep the seed moist to ensure fast germination, don’t allow it to dry out! And when the summer temperatures get here, water a half inch consistently every 23 days. Make sure to keep your eyes open during your regular watering schedule and make sure the grass doesn’t look like its struggling or drying out, if it is, be sure to water it additionally to your regular scheduled watering. Seeding your lawn in spring is not easy task, but its possible with the proper preparation and knowledge. Good Luck!
