Peter Stienwald is serious about training his retrievers to work. Whether it be field test, huntng test, simply hunting Peter works with his dogs six days a week. .

I caught up with Peter at Prado Recreational Dog Park, in Chino Hills, California. After a day with Peter I learned a lot, hopefully I captured it in this video.

Glossary of terms that may come in handy...

Force Fetch

The forced retrieve is know by many names; the trained retrieve, force fetch, force breaking etc. It all boils down to a simple concept. The idea is to train, through the use of some form of compulsion, a dog to pick up an object in his mouth, carry it firmly but gently and deliver it to the handlers hand.

Force to Pile

Teaches the dog to love to bring things to you, make a game of it, make sure you start easy and work up to more difficult conditions (start in your living room, go the yard, end up in a field, for example), teach your dog to love to work with you, and you should not have to force him to pile.

Swim By

The Swimby is a fundamental step in the Basics portion of the program currently used by many successful retriever trainers across the continent. It gets its name from the skill developed by the dog at the end of the lessons: swimming by the handler on command. The Swimby generally follows the teaching of the DoubleT on land. That step prepares the dog for several of the skills that the dog will develop in the water. The Swimby is an important precursor to teaching your dog about water channels and water cheating singles. Novices, seeing the Swimby for the first time often question the process of Swimby and why it is necessary. Experienced trainers have learned that the Swimby produces a dog with a readiness to stay in the water and a dog with important skills that make teaching advanced water work much easier.
