Recipe Measurements & Notes:
Full Sized Batch (Shown in video)
50g Beeswax
150g Coconut Oil
Half Sized Batch
25g Beeswax
75g Coconut Oil
Small Batch (Ideal amount for a wooden wheel)
10g Beeswax
15g Coconut Oil
• Beeswax can be purchased as a block or in pellet form. Pellets are easier to measure out and melt faster, but blocks can be cheaper and easier to source from local bee farmers.
• Beeswax is a very hard substance, soaking the blade of your knife in boiling water for a few minutes can help soften the wax as you cut.
• You can use refined or virgin coconut oil. Virgin oil is more stable and longer lasting, it will provide the best protection for the wood. On the other hand, refined coconut oil has a much milder scent/taste, so it may be a better choice if you’re worried about your hamster chewing on the treated wood.
• The wood balm will need to be reapplied once a year, or sooner if you notice the wood has stopped repelling liquids. The jar of balm can be stored for up to 2 years.
The price of ingredients will vary based on your location.
• 210g Beeswax block €3.60 (50g = €0.85)
• 276g Jar Virgin coconut oil (150g = €1.95)
• Total cost: €7.20 (Final product = €2.80)
