How to Update RV SlideOut Molding with Hand Hewn Barnwood

In this video, we show how we updated the slideout molding in our RV with reclaimed, handhewn Barnwood.

A few years ago, we replaced the original RV slideout molding with new wood, but knew it was just a placeholder until we came across some roughhewn (or handhewn) reclaimed wood.

We love adding character and history to our tiny home on wheels and hope this video inspires you to use reclaimed materials in your own home. The key to using wood in an RV is to use lighter wood or have it milled down. In our instance, we use the “skins” from handhewn beams, which means the wood is much thinner and therefore less weight, without sacrificing the texture or character.

The wood we found is from an 1870's barn and needed some love in regards to washing and cleaning it up, but we are thrilled with the end results! Normally, this type of wood costs between $510 a board foot, depending on where you purchase and if it’s been kiln dried. We lucked out because the owner was preparing for an auction to make space for more antiques, reclaimed wood, and salvaged materials, so he sold it to us for just $20!

You can see our original post on how we replaced the slideout trim below, but we will include an updated post with photos in the future:
