Dog Trainer : Aftab Hassan Lodhi From Attock.

Training a pointer dog for quail hunting in Pakistan requires a systematic approach and patience. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Start with Basic Obedience Training: Before focusing on hunting skills, ensure that your pointer dog has a solid foundation in basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel.

2. Introduce the Scent of Quail: Gradually introduce your dog to the scent of quail by using quail wings or scentdrenched dummies. Allow your dog to sniff and become familiar with the scent, associating it with something positive like treats or praise.

3. Establish the "Point" Behavior: Encourage your dog to naturally exhibit the pointing behavior by using a quail wing or dummy. When your dog shows interest or freezes in a point, reward them with praise and treats. Repeat this process regularly to reinforce the behavior.

4. Encourage Retrieval Skills: Quail hunting often involves retrieving downed birds. Train your pointer dog to retrieve by using retrieving dummies or training bumpers. Start by teaching them to hold and carry the dummy, then gradually introduce the concept of fetching and delivering it to you.

5. Simulate Hunting Scenarios: Once your dog is comfortable with the basics, create simulated hunting scenarios to mimic reallife hunting conditions. This can include hiding quail wings or dummies in tall grass or brush and allowing your dog to locate and point them out.

6. Work on Steadiness: Train your pointer dog to remain steady on point until given the command to flush or retrieve. Practice this by gradually increasing distractions and temptations, such as throwing a dummy or wing nearby, and ensuring your dog maintains their focus on the point.

7. Hunt with Experienced Dogs: Take your trained pointer dog on actual quail hunting trips with experienced dogs. This will provide them with reallife exposure and allow them to learn from seasoned hunters. Observe and reinforce their natural instincts while hunting.

Remember, training a pointer dog for quail hunting requires consistency, positive reinforcement, and a gradual progression of difficulty. It's important to tailor the training to your dog's individual needs and abilities.
