One of the first real hurdles that a new pet owner encounters in the pursuit of dog training is how to teach a dog to sit. It’s even harder if we’re talking about puppy training.

Gather everything you’ll need for the lesson. In this case, all you need is a few dog treats to reward your dog when they display the correct behavior. By offering them a treat, they’ll begin associating the reward with the desirable behavior so treats can speed up the learning process.

Hold a treat in your hand. Let your dog sniff and nibble at it. Next, slowly move the treat slightly above and behind your dog’s head, enough to get them to look up and far back enough that they rest on their back paws. Say “Sit.” in a clear voice. If this doesn’t work, try taking a step closer to them. Once in a sitting position, praise your dog. Try to give them praise as soon as they’re resting on their tush. The idea is that they’ll associate the praise with the action of sitting. Repeat this process.

Dog training, much like human training, requires lots of repetition. Practice this process to teach your dog to sit and you’ll have a dutifully seated doggo in no time!
