Hopefully this upload will help you with your problem. For this customer the water would start out cool/warm and when you tried to adjust the temperature it would go scalding hot even when you turn it to the cold side. Most of the modern tub/shower cartridges have built in balancing valves to help regulate water temps. In older homes this helps when someone flushes a toilet it doesn’t affect your shower (Not supposed to anyway with a balancing valve)

You don’t have to go crazy with buying tools. You don’t have to get them at Harbor Freight either. Walmart will have those basic tools too! A basic set will help you with various jobs around the house.

Also, parts availability will vary from store to store. In my area Lowe’s has only the OFF/ON cartridge but NOT the balancing valve. Menards actually had both in stock. You can get them on Amazon too!

This video covers the brand American Standard. Delta, Kohler, Moen are all different set ups. I’ll try to get those videos too when I come across them.
