How to remove a backflow preventer

Two reasons people remove these are to prevent theft or it is just part of their winterizing process. Just get ready for a tough time if yours has been attached for years because the nuts fuse themselves together with rust and crust.

The one I am removing is a 975XL.

When your backflow preventer is leaking from the vent at the bottom there is something you can do. If you did not winterize it and it is cracked, you will need to buy a new one. These are pricey to replace but not so bad to fix. The unit I am working on is a Zurn Wilkins Model 975XL but these repairs will also work on 950 950XL 975 models.

You can get repair kits like the one linked above. Be sure to check your model's number before ordering to make sure you get the right parts. Here are a few other kits:

975XL Repair Kit w/ springs http://amzn.to/2egfWLf
Cheap 950XL kit if you just need the red rings http://amzn.to/2egh1mn

If you do need to replace your entire unit or parts of one be prepared that the retailer may tell you your old system is up to code anymore and you need a new one. Buying a new backflow preventer usually costs $200 or more just for the unit.
