How to make a Viking shield! This tutorial shows you how to make this round shield including the shield boss, etching, painting etc. Any feedback is welcome!

Round shield has been quite popular throughout history and Vikings were one group of warriors to use this type of shield. It's one the most iconic pieces of armor carried by Viking warriors. Usually Viking shields were colored red and white, but some other colors were used too. With this tutorial you can learn how to make your own Viking shield and color it anyway you want!

This is a quite easy armoring project even if you haven’t done any armors before. There’s some metalworking included but it’s pretty beginner friendly. Originally Viking shields were made of wooden planks, but I made this from plywood. The shield boss is made from 2 mm steel. It’s all cold worked so you don’t need any real blacksmith tools/skill to make this shield. I made some decorations with etching and golden enamel paint to the shield boss. It’s not a historical Viking shield of course, but still pretty cool.

The shield is 80 cm in diameter, weighs about 5 kg and is made from 1 cm thick plywood. The shield boss is about 20 cm in diameter (historically they were usually about 15 cm) and it's made from two pieces.
