How To Install A Shower Drain For Tile [Metal Pipe To 2" PVC]

In this video we are going to be converting a metal cast iron pipe to a 2“ pvc ABS shower drain.

The video starts out with the tub already removed from the tile shower by the owners.

They cut the grout from around the top row of tile that sat on the tub.

Then they removed the tile.

Next they cut the Hardie backer and removed it from the studs.

The front of this tub had a removable front panel. After removing the front panels they cut the pvc drain pipe and water supply lines.

To get the tub out of the tight spot it's in they cut the tub in half with a Sawzall.

This makes it easy to get it out of the spot it was in and easy to get out the door.

The video starts with the tub fully removed and we are ready to start on the shower drain to begin building our shower.

So after the demo the next step is to address the shower drain.

The slab is cut out about one foot by one foot in diameter where the drain pipe is located.

1 1/2 " PVC fitting is the only thing exposed.

Next we need to dig out all the dirt around the pipe to expose the pee trap and the pipe behind the Ptrap.

After removing the dirt we find a cast iron 2" Ptrap inserted into a main 2" cast iron pipe.

We make sure the dirt is also cleared out under the pee trap so nothing is obstructing it when we remove it.

The Ptrap is inserted into the main cast iron pipe.

To remove it we need to pry it out with a 2x4.

Make sure the 2x4 is long enough for good leverage.

Once the Ptrap is pryed out and removed we need to change the rubber tight seal gasket left in the main cast iron pipe.

After prying out the old tight seal gasket we take it to the hardware store to help us find our new one.

Next we clean out the main cast iron pipe as well as we can to remove obstructions inside of the pipe.

To install the new gasket we just simplify slide it into the cast iron pipe.

This gasket allows you to convert your cast iron pipe into 2" PVC by just sliding the pvc into the gasket.

After determining our length we slide the 2" PVC into the gasket and we are ready to install our 2" PVC Ptrap.

After we study our lengths and the best way to turn our fittings we glue our Ptrap to the 2" pipe and glue it together.

Next we stub up 2" PVC pipe up out of the slab by gluing it in the exposed side of the Ptrap.

We now have to mark the top of the slab on our 2" PVC pipe so we can know how far under the slab we need to cut the pipe back.

This is done by laying a level on the slab and marking the pipe.

The shower drain flange needs to be a half inch above the slab.

So we measure the drain to determine how far down to cut the pipe.

It's usually an 1 1/4“ down from our slab mark on the pipe.

After we mark our pipe we cut it with a plunge cut multisaw, or a angle grinder with a masonry blade.

The we glue our drain on the pipe.

Next we fill the dirt back into the hole and use the dirt to level the shower drain.

We then use Sackcrete to fill in the hole the rest of the way to the top of the slab.

Your shower drain flange should be an half inch above the slab for the prefloat shower pan.
