If you have ever seen the folder with flashing a question mark during startup, that means your Macbook can’t locate the startup disk, thereby resulting in a boot failure. This issue of folder with flashing question mark on Macbook may be caused by corrupt macOS & system files, improper disk connection or hardware issues. Whatever causes the error, there are still various working solutions to fix Macbook flashing folder with question mark.

Method 1: Boot MacBook with StartUp Manager

Step 1 Shut down your Macbook by holding down the power button.
Step 2 Press and hold “ALT or Option” key until the Apple logo flashes on your screen.
Step 3 You’ll be prompted to the Macbook Startup Manager. Here select the start disk using the arrow keys and tap “enter” once you have selected the right partition or drive.
Your system will restart normally without flashing the question mark folder.

Method 2: Repair Startup Disk with Disk Utility

Step 1 First we need to get into recovery mode. To do this turn off your mac by holding the power button.
Step 2 Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys
Step 3 Release the keys when you see an Apple logo, spinning globe or other startup screen. You might be prompted to enter a password such as the user who is an administrator of this Mac. Enter the requested password to continue. When the Startup is completed you will see the utilities window.
Step 4 Then choose “Disk Utility” from the macOS utilities window.
Step 5 Select the startup disk, which will be named “Macintosh HD”.
Step 6 Click the “First Aid” tab and tap the “Repair” icon to repair the startup disk.
Step 7 Wait for the repairing process to complete and then head to Apple menu. Choose Startup Disk and restart your Macbook.
If Disk Utility has successfully repaired the startup disk, you won’t see the Macbook flashing folder with question mark anymore.

Method 3: Reinstall macOS

Step 1 Again, hold down the power button and press “Command+R” to put your Macbook into recovery mode.
Step 2 Select “macOS Utilities” and click on “Reinstall macOS”.
