Matilda Goad has a talent for shaking a cocktail of ideas together and coming out with something fun and unexpected. Her style could probably be best characterised as ‘neocountry’. Rooted in her upbringing in rural England, it is in parts unapologetically old fashioned think chintz, scallops and frills while also calling upon a wide frame of contemporary references, from Americana to Japanese restaurant design. In 2018 House & Garden began following the renovation of the British designer and creative consultant Matilda Goad's new home. Our aim was to create a series charting the journey of a house over a period of years, to reassure people decorating their own homes that it doesn’t happen overnight. That creating a layered, interesting interior is something that happens in stages, and that those stages aren't always linear or smooth.
