Evan and Katelyn

We tried SLA printing for the first time using our Moai! Thanks Matterhackers for sponsoring this video! If you have any 3D printing needs, check them out: https://goo.gl/9HcjZD

We made a UV box to cure our resin and tested two techniques for cleaning the prints before curing. materials & links below!

We learned so much on this project and we are so excited that we can do SLA resin prints now! They can get really fine detail because the layer lines are pretty much undetectable, so they don’t require the priming and sanding of FFF prints. We also go over how to build a UV box, which makes curing these prints a breeze. It’s essentially just a cardboard box, lined with foil (that’s attached with spray adhesive), with a hole cut out of the top that you attach a UV light to. As a bonus, we got a tiny solar powered turntable to rotate the piece. You could theoretically just leave them in the sun too, but the UV box seemed like a quicker way to cure them. We also tested two methods of cleaning them before curing. Resin SLA prints have a layer of liquid resin on them when they come out of the Moai (or whatever 3D printer you’re using) covered in a thin layer of resin, and you want to clean that off before curing them otherwise you will cure on the extra resin as well. The cheapest method is to just get two mason jars, one with alcohol, one with water, and shake the print first in the alcohol, then the water, then alcohol, then water. The other method we tried was using the ultrasonic cleaner. So instead of shaking the alcohol jar, we put it in the cleaner instead. Both methods seems to work to clean off the resin, but Evan’s theory is that the ultrasonic cleaner would make a bigger difference with a more detailed print. One note our mason jars were too skinny for our fullsized print so we had to use tupperware and it was very splashy because our seal was not great. Make sure you have a good seal!
