California Condors have the largest wingspan of any North American bird, rumoured to reach 3.4m/11ft. They're also the second heaviest, behind the Trumpeter Swan, and have one of the longest avian lifespans at 60 years. Of course, that's if they manage to avoid the many hazards of today. Lead poisoning from carcasses left by hunters forms the main threat in modern times, but historically strychnine and DDT also devastated this once widespread bird. This is an allencompassing conservation story, including more controversial topics like the role zoos and hunters play in preserving a species.
