Let's look at How Stray Subverts Violence in Video Games. This video essay is all about Stray and why it's my Game of the Year 2022 because of it's themes, storytelling, lore, and subversion of combat in modernday video games. It's among a lot of GOTY lists with games like God of War Ragnarok, Elden Ring, Tunic and Sifu which are all pretty violent. So Stray really stands out from all of its 2022 contemporaries. The Kowloon Walled City inspired cat game from Anapurna Interactive is more than just a cat game. It's a cyberpunk game that makes us question the place of megacorporations like Amazon and Google in our lives. It also makes us question if we need violence in video games in the first place. Combat video games can be a lot of fun, but the creativity on display with Stray's lack of combat is phenomenal as well. It follows in the footsteps of indie titans like Journey and Abzu and even Limbo in some ways to be game that could change a lot of things for the future of gaming.
