Does genre matter in video games? Is Limbolike going to be a new genre like soulslike, roguelike, zeldalike, and metroidvania? In this month's genre video essay I got to sit down and film a Silt dev interview with Dom Clarke from Spiral Circus, the development team behind Silt. We talk about the creation of Silt, the meaning of genre, and the legacy of Limbo. Genres like soulslikes, roguelikes, zeldalikes, metroidvanias, and even first person shooters (DOOM clones) can all be traced to one singular stand out game. But is the somethinglike or somethinglike genre name fair? Does it forever invite comparison?
