Hi Everyone!

My name is Dan, and I am a Veterinarian. Today I a sharing how a vet will get a urine sample from your cat. The veterinarian will do a procedure called a cystocentesis. This means by using a needle they will draw urine from the urinary bladder. Veterinarians will use an ultrasound to guide the needle into the urinary bladder.

Cats commonly will get urinary bladder infections, cystitis, feline idiopathic cystitis, FLUTD also called feline lower urinary tract disease. These diseases can cause abnormal urinary habits like urinating outside of the litter box or blood in the urine.

Cats, unlike dogs, can not be walked to get urine. For this reason your veterinarian will use an ultrasound to view the urinary bladder and make sure it is big enough or full enough with urine. Using a very small gauge needle that is longer than a normal needle, the vet will advance the needle into the abdomen and then into the urinary bladder. The veterinarian will then pull back on the syringe to collect urine.

This urine can then be submitted for a urine analysis or even urine culture. This will help diagnose infection or inflammation in the urinary bladder. Once diagnosed, this will allow for better treatment of the medical concern at hand.
