Candlenut, or "Kemiri," is a fruit native to Indonesia. In use for centuries here, besides food this treegrowing nut has such high oil content that it can indeed burn as an ingredient of a candle.

As we are nearing the end of our time here in the Lake Toba area, there are still two more local ingredients I want so badly to try candlenut is the first!! Today, incredible, we don't have to go far at all :) What a meal we have to share together this evening.

The wonderful couple who are taking care of us at their guesthouse (Laster Jonny's, and I highly recommend it!!) have a very tasty menu, to which they are adding for us a few special dishes using ingredients from their own land on Samosir island. These recipes including candlenut are simply stunning, full of the exact freshness and rich flavors we imagine before the trip.
