Hitachi Scrapping at Ballarat North Workshops - August 2010

On Saturday 21st of August 2010, I was coincidentally near the Ballarat North Railway workshops when a number of withdrawn Hitachi suburban cars were being cut up for scrap. I photographed trailer car 1960T being systematically ripped apart by the 'jaws of death' over a period of about an hour, and this video is made up of a selection of the still images I took. My camera at the time didn't have video capabilities, so you will have to imagine the incredible noise this generated! The bulk of Hitachi cars had been withdrawn prior to 2006, and I'm not sure why it took so long to scrap these ones. A small number of Hitachi sets remained in service until early 2014. The two Motor cars from 1960T's set (203M and 204M) were scrapped later that day or early the next. The last photo in this slideshow shows 204M being moved into position. As a side note, I was only here because I was waiting to photograph a steam shuttle with Y112 and K153 that was operating between Ballarat and Sulky.
