Tarikh Episode 364
Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Ganga Canal, a major irrigation canal in northern India that carries water from the Ganges River to the agricultural lands of the region. It was built in the mid19th century under the direction of Proby Cautley, a British engineer who was tasked with finding a way to bring water to the dry and arid lands of the region.
Cautley's design for the canal involved building a series of dams and reservoirs along the Ganges to capture and store water during the rainy season, which could then be released into the canal during the dry season. The construction of the Ganga Canal was a major undertaking, requiring the labour of thousands of workers and the use of cuttingedge technology and techniques.
Despite the many challenges and obstacles that Cautley and his team faced during the construction process, the Ganga Canal was eventually completed and has played a vital role in the development and prosperity of the region. Today, the canal continues to provide a reliable source of irrigation for the agricultural lands of northern India.
We hope you enjoyed learning about the construction of the Ganga Canal and the important role that Proby Cautley played in its development.
