Is it possible to accurately sharpen a metal cutting drill bit in a home shop without a dedicated drill sharpening machine? The answer is yes! A little patience and some practice will be required as well as a bench grinder and a drill point gauge. To learn how to use a bench grinder safely take a look at my BENCH GRINDER 101 video (link below). The difficulty with hand sharpening drill bits is getting all the required geometry in a single movement. Hold, push, pivot without rotating and measure is what needs to be mastered. It would be nice, in order to better understand why this three part movement is important, to watch my HOW METAL CUTTING DRILL BITS WORK VIDEO (link below). Drilling with a poorly sharpened or worn drill bit is very frustrating so take some time and learn how to sharpen drills because machining should be fun! Not frustrating.
