During the winter of 1927/1928, U.S. government officials conducted a secret investigation into mysterious circumstances in the decaying port town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts.

The operation ended with the demolition of several buildings. According to media reports, even the offshore reef located a mile and a half out to the sea near Innsmouth was shelled with torpedoes.

The investigation was the result of a terrifying eyewitness account by a young student who had traveled to the remote town six months earlier.
