Grinding Filling Fairing and Priming a Fibreglass Boat Hull | Healey Boat Restoration Part 6

Follow
Dan Lee Boatbuilding

In this video we turn the boat back over and begin the process of prepping the hull for paint. That involves grinding off the old gel coat, fairing the bottom of the boat. Filling it with fairing compound and doing several different sanding operations to get the boat back to a nice fair shape ahead of the paint topcoat.

Here we look through the range of products that are used within the process including West System epoxy thickened with 402 milled glass fibres, 404 high density filler and 407 low density filling and fairing compound. We prime the boat with Epifanes high build epoxy primer.

In the next video we will be doing the final preparation and application for topcoat paint. I will also show my method for casting an epoxy pad in order to shim the prop shaft strut for installation and alignment within the boat.
