Ghost Tree - Dec 28 2023

At one point, Ghost Tree on 17mile drive in Pebble Beach was one of the premier big wave towin surfing spots in the world, before regulations were passed that pushed it out of the spotlight.

Fred Van Dyke is rumored to have bodysurfed Ghost Tree in the 60s. However, for decades afterward, few surfers dared to ride the wave, due to its steep drops, unmakeable speed, and proximity to the rocks.

Things changed in the early 2000s when big wave surfers realized they could bypass regulations meant for smaller watercraft by towing into waves with threeseater jet skis.

From 2005 to 2007, large west swells slammed the Central Coast, thrilling towin surfers with waves reaching up to 50 feet.

But it wasn't all positive. As the wave gained popularity, it became overcrowded with jet skis, and the spot remained perilous, ultimately claiming the life of local legend Peter Davi in 2007.

Following extensive debate, NOAA expanded its regulations to ban all personal watercraft, aiming to safeguard both the Monterey Marine Sanctuary and human lives.

Since then, Ghost Tree has faded into obscurity, except for the few brave souls who dare to charge the wave when conditions are right.
