Get Your Dog To Respond Faster: Latency In Dog Training

Follow
Dogs That

When you cue your dog to perform a behavior, do they respond with lightning speed or a leisurely pace? The lag time between your cue and your dog’s response is called latency. When I design a training plan for my dogs, latency is built in, because I want super fast responses to cues. We’re covering why dogs might respond slowly and what you can do to fix it.

00:00 How fast does your dog respond to cues?
00:40 Latency in dog training.
01:11 Fluency in dog training.
01:21 Causes of lag time in dogs responding to cues.
02:02 Accidentally training dogs to respond slowly.
02:43 How environment influences your dog.
03:12 Your dog isn’t ignoring you and here’s why.
03:44 Arousal states and fast responses by dogs.
04:05 Mistakes people make that create lag time for dogs.
05:18 Reinforcement builds behavior.
05:35 Actively notice when your dog responds slower.
06:54 Take the problem away from the environment.
07:31 Ask for ten repetitions of behavior in new environment.
08:42 Jean Donaldson’s “Push, Stick or Drop” behavior proofing method.
10:01 Generalize the behavior in at least 5 different environments.
10:34 Test the behavior in original problem environment.
11:47 Fast responses generalize well to many behaviors.

In the episode you'll hear:
• What you need to know about latency of behavior.
• When to consider a dog’s behavior fluent.
• Why dogs develop lag times between a cue and response.
• What to consider if dogs are slow to respond.
• How to leverage arousal states for focused and fast behaviors.
• Common mistakes people make that create lag time for dogs.
• How to reduce latency with the example of a dog sitting at the door.
• Why to take the problem away from the environment.
• About using Jean Donaldson’s “Push, Stick or Drop” to reduce latency.
• When to test the latency of a behavior in new habitats.
• That fast responses generalize well to many behaviors.
