The second video in my "From the Rails Up" series on SD402's. This time it's all about the parts that let the locomotive roll down the rail.

For those that haven't seen Part 00, I'll mention the disclaimer again: I do work for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, but this channel isn't affiliated with them in any way. Any opinions you hear about anything are mine and not meant to be reflective of the company. My job is to fix locomotives, not represent the company publicly.

One correction I did want to make of myself is; while this video was uploading, I dug out some of my training material and realized I was wrong about what the throat of a wheel is. The throat of a wheel is where the taper from the tread transitions to the inside of the flange.

I also realized I neglected to mention the dust shields used on the Hyatt box axles. They can be seen in several of the pictures on the outside hub of the wheels.

Also, all images used in this video are mine except for two. The images I used for examples of spalling and shelling damage were taken from a page on the DOT's website. The page was last updated on October 22nd, 2019 as of the time I accessed it.

(Haven't gotten verified by YouTube yet so the link won't be clickable. Sorry.)

One last thing I also want to mention is, since this series is focused on SD402's, I used a 40inch wheel for reference. More modern locomotives will use a 42in wheel which will have a 38inch index groove.

I think that's everything I wanted to say. Thanks for watching and have a good one!
