The complete history of the EXP The idea the EXP came from the company's marketing research. The growing number of one and twoperson households, combined with the lifestyle of the younger target audience who desired a small sporty car, led Ford to believe that Americans wanted a something like the EXP. It was to be a personal vehicle for two people with a cargo area in back. Ford expected to build and sell 200,000 EXPs and 70,000 Mercury LN7s in the 1982 model year.
