Fly Tying the Yellow Hammer Classic Wet Fly Pattern with Matt O'Neal

Follow
Savage Flies

An easytotie classic wet fly, this pattern is a killer in trout streams throughout the country. As a nymph the Yellow Hammer is thought to have originated in the Southern Appalachian (sometimes called the Yellerhammer). Tied as a wet fly, it's a completely different version though yellow remains the prominent color. This pattern can be found in the Federation of Fly Fishers 'Fly Pattern Index.'

Hook: #1216 wet fly
Thread: Yellow
Rib: Black thread
Body: Yellow floss
Thorax: Peacock herl
Hackle: Grizzly hen, or mottled soft hackle

Savage Flies is a new project (named after one of my homewaters, the Savage River in Western Maryland, US). I've been trout fishing for many years but have only been tying for the last couple and am learning more every week. If you have any pointers on techniques that would help, I would love to hear them in the comments.

I've been posting new videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00 pm EST.
