Life for nomads in Mongolia is changing, the modern world and the promise of economic success has caused thousands of Mongolians to leave their nomadic herding lifestyles behind in search of opportunity in the city. But not all are embracing this new way of life and many are preserving their traditions and continuing to live the life of their ancestors, dating back to the era of Genghis Khan. In fact almost 40% of Mongolians still live a nomadic lifestyle.
Nomads in Mongolia mainly live off the land, and move at least twice a year to find better pastures for their livestock. This lifestyle may seem free & beautiful, which of course it is, however, its also very difficult, especially in winter, when temperatures in rural Mongolia can drop as low as 50'C.
We spent a few days living with a particular nomadic family in their winter pastures, on the edge of the Gobi Desert, to learn more about their life, traditions, how they survive the harsh winter in Yurts (or Gers as they're known in Mongolia) and to find out if & how the modern world & technology is changing their way of life.
Travel often changes perceptions, and challenges the ideas you have of the world and its people, but the ideas we had about the life of nomads in Mongolia before arriving, were completely the opposite of what we found, and the family that allowed us in to their home taught us so much.
