DISCLAIMER: (Viewer Discretion Advised) At around 7 pm MT The raccoon climbs up the nest tree and takes food from the nest. It retreats for a few moments then returns and gets the oldest of the two eaglets, F45, who bravely stood up to the raccoon and tried to ward it off with outstretched wings. F45 was taken alive and pulled over the side of the nest as the raccoon retreated in haste when the parent returned to the nest. The parent (Dad) gave chase to the coon and for the next hour or so an eagle is seen flying around the nest tree and vocalizing until after dark. Then the parent returns to the nest and stays with F46 for the remainder of the night. I have not seen both parents on the nest today. The Colorado Wildlife Agency arrived within the hour of being called to search for the eaglet. Amazing!!! Many thanks we give to you for your speedy arrival and attention to this matter. They found FSV 45's remains and took them to be tested for Avian Influenza. Our hearts are broken! RIP Sweet Baby.
The night before Mom had brought a young live raccoon to the nest and fed it to the eaglets. Was this a random unrelated visit by a hungry raccoon or was there more to it? Might it have been looking for it's baby? My heart goes out to all the viewers and to Mom & Pa Eagle parents!

What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSVN0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSVN0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later.
