Rob: Hey everybody, it's Rob here at Etrailer.com and today we're going to be taking a look at the CURT Class three customfit trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Jeep Compass. Now we know everybody wants to look at it and go over some of the features, so we're going to go ahead and do that first, but if you stick around to the end of the video, we're also going to show you how to get it installed so you can have the confidence to do it at home. But we do have our hitch in place, and I think it's a really good looking hitch, mainly because the crosstube's completely hidden, so the only thing we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out of the bottom of our Jeep, gives it almost a factory OEM type look to it and again not have that big bar hanging down below our Jeep, distracting from the looks. But it is a class three, so it is going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube openings, so we're going to have a really wide variety of options when it comes to accessories that we can mount up.Obviously everybody knows you can tow a trailer with a trailer hitch, put a ball mount in there, hookup really easy but at the same time if we want to hit the trails, go with some friends, the park, something like that, we can take some bikes with us. Or for going on a road trip, we can make some room on the inside of our Compass, move some of that gear to the outside with the cargo carrier, but regardless of how you're going to be using your hitch, all the accessories you're going to use are going to mount to the hitch pinhole here on the side. Our CURT Hitch is going to accept a standard 58 pin and clip.

Now, these aren't going to come with the hitch, but you can find them here at Etrailer.com, along with some locking devices to keep your accessories secure, and antirattle devices to cut down on the annoying rattling sound while we're driving down the road. Now, if you are going to be towing a trailer, you got to have a spot to hook your safety chains. And here we have a loop style, they are going horizontal opposed to some of them that go up and down on the side of the receiver tube, so it's kind of nice that we're not going to be losing any ground clearance. But we've got a pretty wide opening, got, what I consider most normal size hooks, got plenty of room to get them hooked on, take them off and we should never have to worry about any kind of interference or even potentially hitting the bottom of our Jeep. Even if you got some of those large oversized hooks, there's still plenty of room, and again, no worry about any kind of interference. Now, if you're looking for a hitch for your Compass, you obviously have something in mind you want to do, so the weight capacity is going to be pretty important because we want to make sure it's up to the task that we put it to. So our hitch is going to have a 600pounds tongue weight, it's the maximum downward force at the end of the receiver tube.

It's actually quite a bit, we can be able to carry four or five, maybe even six bikes with us, and really maximize the carrying capacity of those large cargo carriers. At the same time, our hitch is going to have a 4,000pound gross trailer weight rating, that's how much the hitch can pull, but that does include the trailer weight and the load we have on it, so with those numbers in mind, I do urge you to doublecheck your Compass' owner's manual because those are the ratings for our hitch, and we don't want to exceed the manufacturer's rating for our Jeep. Now, I'd like to give you a few measurements and these are going to help you whenever you're looking for accessories for your new hitch, like a ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, it should be right about five inches. That measurement is going to help you when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have adequate room so you can put them in the upright storage position and not make contact with the rear bumper. And from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's right about 13 and a half inches.

Now at that height, I would definitely recommend a cargo carrier or a bike rack with a raised shank, that way we get a little bit more ground clearance out of it, but at the same time that measurement is also going to help you when you're looking for a ball mount so you can find the appropriate rise or drop to match up to your trailer. But now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's go through the installation process tog
