"As the Endermen continued to roam the land of the end, they started to get more advanced with the teleporting. A couple of Endermen eventually managed to teleport back into the overworld. Excited to tell the others, they teleported back into the end and explained the news. At first, all Endermen were happy to finally be able to go back home after so long, but they realized shortly after that the dragon, Which they now had a close bond with, needed their protection from the other builders who were now coming into the end more frequently than ever. So, they made their choice: a few of them decided to go back into the overworld and then also the nether, while the rest stayed in the end to protect the dragon from future intruders."
