Earth Day: Turn awareness into action

Protecting Oregon's famous natural beauty is a big job. That's why partnerships are key.

One local partnership involving beer and water is helping to protect one of the northwest's biggest natural attractions.

This Earth Day, the nonprofit Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership (LCEP) is collaborating with the Astoria treasure Fort George Brewery.

LCEP is in charge of restoration efforts all along the Columbia River, specifically the 146 river miles from Bonneville Dam to Astoria.

Jasmine ZimmerStucky, the Public and Legislative Affairs Manager of LCEP, took KATU to Sandy River Delta Park.

Under the shade of trees in Toby's Woods, the dedicated work of volunteers will be visible for years to come.

"We bring volunteers out here to plant native trees and shrubs when they go in the ground, they're about up to your knee," ZimmerStucky said. "Then, in 10 more years, they'll be as big as the forest around us."

That work is the exact reason that the nonprofit Earth Day Oregon supports LCEP each year around this time. Earth Day Oregon's mission is to uplift environmental organizations like LCEP and connect them with business partners.

When you look at these nonprofits, for them, Earth Day is every day," said Kelly Stevens, Executive Director of Earth Day Oregon. "Yearround, they wake up, they do this work, and for the rest of us, it's really not. It's once a year on April 22.

Through Earth Day Oregon, LCEP formed a relationship with Fort George Brewery.

"One percent of all of our proceeds from our 12ounce cans this month are going to Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership," said Brian Bovenizer, Marking and Sales Director of Fort George Brewery.

Bovenizer says this collaboration isn't as unlikely as you might think, for one specific reason: "Without good water, there is no good beer."
